A LACK of competition from independent fuel stations in Tamworth has kept the city ranked as one of the most expensive in the state in regular and diesel fuels according to NRMA fuel watchdog website Bowser Buster.

Two weeks before Christmas Tamworth hit an all time low of being the second most expensive fuel in the state of the 52 towns and cities registered on the website. Only Tumut was more expensive.
The major petrol station chains in town are retailing fuel at an average of 153.9 cents per litre with the closest independent station to the town being Nemingha beating this price by 7 cents per litre, with diesel being beaten by over 5 cents, hovering around the 155 cent mark in town, tempting residents to take the drive out of town to fill up.
Yesterday Goonoo Goonoo Rd had the cheapest fuel in Tamworth with the United retailing at 149.2 cents per litre, and the City Gate Roadhouse selling at 149.5 cents.
NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said that unfortunately Tamworth is one of a handful of unique towns that suffer from a lack of competition, and as such suffer from unfairly high fuel prices.
“Tamworth is one of the only towns in the state that has had the average price staying above the 150 cents per litre mark for the past three months straight, and it is expected to stay that way into next year,” Mr Khoury said.
Even though we may have slid up the rankings a few spots we still remain permanently fixed in the top five most expensive in the state, with other towns such as Tumut, Cooma, and Inverell.
“The one remaining factor in all those towns is the fact that there is no or very little competition from independent stations, other towns that have a competitive market can be up to 15 cents per litre cheaper,” Mr Khoury said.
