The Ambulance Service of NSW responds to an average of 3234 calls a day, the equivalent of one every 26.7 seconds, and Christmas is no different.
The service has released a few basic safety tips to help make your Christmas celebrations accident-free:
* Presents like scooters, bikes and skateboards should all come with safety equipment like helmets and knee and elbow pads;
* Keep an eye on children around barbecue hotplates and flames;
* Never put flammable liquid on a barbecue. Accelerants used on a barbecue are very
dangerous;
* Watch children around swimming pools. You won’t hear them get into trouble and they will sink to the bottom of the pool very quickly;
* At large family gatherings there will be cars coming and going so watch out for young
children playing in and around the yard;
* Be mindful of potential allergy hazards in the food you serve;
* Remember, alcohol and activities like surfing and pushbikes do not mix;
* Christmas can be a lonely time and source of unhappiness for many. Check on the welfare of friends and relatives who are experiencing difficulty at this time;
* If you are feeling down, call Lifeline 13 11 14; Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800; beyondblue 1300 22 4636; or Mensline 1300 789 978.
