One northbound lane of South Dowling Street, just past Cleveland Street in Surry Hills, is closed while Sydney Water crews try to fix the main.
A Sydney Water spokeswoman said crews were hoping to fix it by midday.
"There's a tree next to the burst main. Hopefully that won't complicate things," she said.
The spokeswoman said it was hard to say what caused the problem at this stage.
The Transport Management Centre said motorists should expect delays.
"Motorists travelling in the area should exercise caution when passing the site and allow additional travel time."
