The council is calling for expressions of interest from community members to be part of the decision-making process, with a planning committee to consider ideas and the future direction of the project.
The town’s business community was briefed on the plans at a New England Mutual business breakfast last month.
Essential Energy has plans to upgrade ageing electricity infrastructure in the CBD in the next 12 months that will involve overhead lighting and underground cabling being installed.
While Essential Energy will be responsible for the cabling, considerable civil works will need to be undertaken by the council.
Council engineering services director Ben Harris said the planned electricity upgrade opened up an opportunity for the council to work in conjunction with Essential Energy to make its own improvements to the CBD’s footpaths and roads.
The council recently completed a strategic plan to upgrade the CBD area, to incorporate a more modern look and solve a number of problems with footpaths and roads.
The project, which will cover Bradley St from Ollera St to Mackenzie St, may also involve side streets.
Some of the ideas outlined included establishing a roundabout at the Ollera St intersection, upgrading Bradley Ln to accommodate delivery vehicles, changes to parking, improved disability access, new street lighting and improved traffic flow.
In making the plans, the council has considered the history of the town and is keen to maintain a country feel, while meeting the requirements of current and future use.
It has sought expressions of interest from architects.
