Shield for Tamworth hackers still going strong 35 years on

November 21 2012 - 8:18pm

TAMWORTH Golf Club presented its  major award winners with their trophies on Saturday afternoon. Amongst them were Barry Lavell and Arthur Ruttley. They started the Lavell-Ruttley Shield many years ago and are still going strong. On Sunday, former City United cricket allrounder Bruce Collier received the 35th Lavell Ruttley Shield. It was well deserved. But the impressive thing is the fact the Lavell Ruttley Shield has been going for 35 years and that Barry and Arthur are still around to present it. The Lavell-Ruttley Shield started life  as a trophy for the hackers playing on a Sunday. “When we started playing in the ’60s,” Arthur said,  “we could only play Sunday mornings. Unless you were good enough you couldn’t play Saturday. That was mainly for A graders so we had to play Sundays but had a really good time.” They still are. “Great to see Brucie win this too,” Arthur added.
