The 39-year-old man was caught by police walking along the Pacific Highway just south of Grafton on Saturday morning.
He was earlier reported missing from from the minimum security Glen Innes Correctional Centre on Friday afternoon.

At 6.15am on Saturday, officers from Grafton were patrolling the Pacific Highway about five kilometres south of the city when the officers observed a pedestrian and stopped to speak with the man.
After establishing the man’s identity as Glen Innes’ missing prisoner, he was arrested and taken to Grafton Police Station.
He was later charged with “inmate escape from lawful custody” and formally refused bail.
The man will appear at Grafton Local Court on Wednesday, February 13.
