The side, which played in the North Companions strip, embraced the wet weather and came out on top to win the five-team tournament on Sunday.
“The rain added a bit of excitement,” Northern Inland Football general manager Julia Farina said.
“There was a lot of slipping and sliding but what that brought out was a lot of camaraderie.
“When players were falling over, the opposition were picking them up.”
While Farina was happy with how the tournament went in 2018, the general manager said NIF was looking to change the timing of the tournament.
“We’re happy but we’re aiming to have it before the season as it has been a pre-season tournament before,” she said.
“We’re hoping that will attract more teams as they enter the 2019 tournament. It was disappointing we didn’t have enough women’s teams this year.
“It was great to see Gunnedah and Quirindi come over and play against the Tamworth teams.”
The win for Your Mate – which was made up of North Companions along with players from other clubs – continued a strong weekend for Northies.
The previous day North Companions snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Norths United in the Northern Inland Premier League, 1-0, thanks to a goal midway through the first half.
“It was a pretty dour game but I think we had the better of it in the first half. We had a couple good chances we failed to capitalise on and the second half was pretty tight,” North Companions coach Gavin Thompson said.
“Toward the end of the game, they were pushing players forward to find an equaliser but we held on”
Five rounds remain in the NIPL while the Tamworth District Football competitions are also heading into finals. The women’s competition has split into two divisions before finals start in September.
