Piallaway resident Myra Norris sadly passed away on March 26, 2018. Currabubula Branch of the Red Cross was saddened by the news of the passing of their long standing member. Myra was presented with a 70 years’ service medal in January by Helen Lesley the Zone Representative for Red Cross. At the presentation Helen thanked and congratulated Myra for her years of service to the Australian Red Cross and for the work she had done over the years to raise funds for the Red Cross.

Myra’s family have recounted how proud Myra was of her 70 year service medal and were very grateful that they were able to share the presentation occasion with Myra.
Myra joined the Currabubula Branch of the Red Cross in 1947 and had been a member since. Myra who was 101 and a Patron of the Currabubula Branch. Myra and members of her family have been involved in the Currabubula Red Cross Art Show and Sale since its inception in 1964. Myra’s son Geoff Norris who is local artist and farmer often exhibits his artwork in the Art Show.
Geoff said “I grew up always knowing the Art show and it was a high light of each year.” Geoff has been working on his entries for this year and is hoping to get 4 works finished including some lino prints.
Grace Norris, Myra’s granddaughter said it won’t be the same going to the art show this year but she plans on continuing her Grandmothers legacy and will step into her shoes and become involved in the Currabubula Art Show.
The family is currently discussing options for creating an ongoing memorial to Myra and her service to the Red Cross and the Art Show that would be included in future Art Shows.
Currabubula Red Cross Branch Executives and members passed on their condolences to Myra’s family and said Myra will be a sadly missed member of the branch and her absence at the Art Show will be noticed.
The Currabubula Art show and sale exhibits over 500 art works each year along with guest artist demonstrations, locally made hand crafts and silver jewellery. The Art show raises money for the Australian Red Cross each year. In 2017 over $20,000 was donated as a result of the art show.
Morning and afternoon tea and lunch is available each day, with the support of other local Red Cross braches and community groups, all proceeds also going to the Red Cross. In conjunction with the Art show Currabubula Public school hold a small schools art show.
The 2018 Art show will open Thursday night May 17 with the support of Tamworth Lions Club.
Entries for artist are now available with sections including water colour, acrylic, miniatures and any other media, and a fairly new section for local artists. Entries can be picked up locally and are available online.
