NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rose Webb, said Fair Trading had learnt of businesses using unsolicited sales techniques operating in northern and North West NSW.
“Unfortunately, people in regional areas can often be disadvantaged as consumers due to the sometimes limited business options in smaller towns,” she said.
“We have recently received reports of a trader taking advantage of consumers by selling and renting household appliances and whitegoods, which are overpriced, of poor quality or not fit for purpose.
“The reports suggest the trader may have used coercive tactics to promote these products and make a quick buck.

“This type of misleading or deceptive conduct may constitute an offence under the Australian Consumer Law, and NSW Fair Trading investigators are currently working to identify those involved.”
Ms Webb encouraged anyone who thinks they may have been the victim of such dodgy dealings to contact Fair Trading immediately.
“Residents in the state’s north are reminded to use their best judgement when unsolicited salespeople come knocking, and remember if something seems too good to be true - it usually is,” she said.
Consumers living in Northern and north-western NSW who have been pressured or misled into making a purchase or signing a contract under these circumstances are encouraged to lodge a complaint with NSW Fair Trading at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or by calling 133 220.
