The proposal to abolish daylight saving was heard by councilliors at Wednesday night’s Gunnedah Shire Council (GSC) meeting at Curlewis Community Hall.
Councillors heard the proposal and request for action put forward in a letter by CAD president Judith Law but chose to defer the request to the state government for consideration.
Cr Owen Hasler spoke in favour of shortening the daylight saving period at the meeting.
“Personally I would be all for shortening daylight saving by at least a month,” Cr Hasler said.
“However, I don’t think council is in a position to support the removal of daylight saving all together, as I feel it is more of a state government issue.”
Fellow councillor Ann Luke supported the motion to refer the issue to the state government citing a lack of public consultation.
“I don’t think it would be right for us to make a decision on this issue without proper consultation with the community,” Cr Luke said.
“As well as that, I think it would be hard to make a decision on this without some sort of public consultation such as a poll or a vote of some sort.”
Cr Colleen Fuller agreed the matter was best dealt with by the state government.
“I think it’s a state government affair,” Cr Fuller said.
“It’s a decision that affects more than just our community so it should be onto them to make a decision.”

Over the years there have been several calls to alter daylight saving in NSW including a failed push in state parliament last year to shorten daylight saving.
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson pushed for the shortening in state parliament last year and told The Namoi Valley Independent on Wednesday afternoon he will continue to fight to shorten daylight saving.
“We are seeing it at the moment, people are getting up at 7am in the morning and it’s still dark which is ridiculous,” Mr Anderson.
“I have felt for a long time that daylight saving in NSW is too long.
“I would like to see it shortened to just include the months between November and February, just the summer months.
“Rest assured I will continue to fight to shorten daylight savings in parliament and at every level I can.”
