Officers were patrolling Falcon Drive shortly before 3am on Tuesday following reports three people were acting suspiciously around cars.
Police found one offender standing at a Hyundai van with an interior light on before he ran when he spotted police.
Officers gave chase in Wagtail Close but the offender escaped.
Nothing was stolen from the van, but a nearby stationwagon was also targeted and a credit card stolen.
Police are urging locals to lock-up and report suspicious activity.
Meanwhile, a white Ipod, cash, shoes and a Peter Brock glove have been taken from a car parked in Ebony Close in Tamworth.
The resident told police the car was locked but was hit by thieves between 9.30pm on Monday and 9am on Tuesday.
And, a 37-year-old Manilla man is counting the costs after his wallet was taken in Manilla.
The man parked the utility in front of a store in Court Street about 12.35pm on Monday, but left the passenger window down.
He returned five minutes later to find his wallet missing from the car.
