Lunn was advised to buy Pretty Pine by a couple of blokes in Melbourne.
On Saturday the bay mare claimed her second win from just four starts for him, taking out the feature Boggabri RSL Boggabri Cup Benchmark 53 Handicap (2050m).
Trained by Lunn’s brother Garry, and sporting Lunn’s trademark St George colours – complete with red vee and dragon – the bay mare surged down the outside to beat home Josie’s Saga (Todd Payne) by half-a-length.
Favourite Supreme Goddess (Sally Torrens) was back another almost length away third after leading the field into the straight.
“I’ve only had her for about a month-and-a-half,” Lunn said.
After winning second up at Gilgandra, she impressed again last start at Orange.
Up against horses that had won five or six races, she finished fifth.
“She’s more than paid her way. I paid $2,500 for her and she’s won two $10,000 TAB races,” he said.
Boasting a best result of third before he purchased the four-year old, he praised the job his brother has done with her.
“I own most of them and he trains them,” he said.
“I don’t know what he does but he can get them to go.”
He said they’ll just poke around and try and find some staying races for her.
“[Jockey] Ben (Looker) said she’ll stay all day,” he said.
It was a fruitful meeting for the combination with Victare second in the previous race – the MPC Earthmoving Benchmark 57 Handicap (1000m). Toorak Beauty was earlier third behind Rodney Robb’s Bells ‘N’ Bows and Brett Cavanough’s Innately in the Hopefuel Gunnedah Gold Cup Sunday 27th May Maiden Handicap (1400m).
Lunn was the only trainer to win multiple races but there were a couple of riding doubles with Peter Graham and Clayton Gallagher both riding home two winners.
