Tamworth Regional Council has called for nominations for this year’s heritage awards and people are being urged to think beyond the typical “brick and mortar” view of heritage significance.
Nominations can recognise the work of groups, individuals or even events or publications honoring Tamworth’s heritage.

Council’s heritage adviser, Clare James, said it was important to credit people endeavouring to keep local history relevant and acknowledge the time devoted to planning and preparing their projects.
“If these things aren’t happening, we are lesser for it and it could mean a building is not cared for or not conserved,” Ms James said.
She said the awards served to grow awareness of what Tamworth offered and why it was crucial to conserve.
“It could be in a building, a publication or even an oral recording,” she said.
“It helps tell the stories of Tamworth.
“It also demonstrates what the community is interested in and justifies the legislation around heritage.”
Councillor Juanita Wilson will be one of the judges for the awards, which will be announced on April 27 as part of the heritage festival.
“The awards are such a great opportunity to highlight the work of community groups and individuals in restoring our Region’s heritage,” Cr Wilson said.
She is also the chair of council’s heritage working group and said the awards had acknowledged a range of projects, including websites and educational kits.
“In 2016, we saw some fantastic projects take out awards including the installation of heritage signs, the conservation of the Manilla Town Clock and the Tamworth City Library’s Goonoo Goonoo Station Oral History Project,” she said.
“Preserving the heritage of our region is so important and I encourage those who have made an effort to do so, to submit a nomination form to us.
“We’ve seen such great diversity in nominations, from the traditional restoration projects right through to websites and educational kits.”
Nomination forms are available on TRC’s website or in any council office.
Nominations close on Thursday 15 March.
Details about the upcoming awards and the 2018 heritage festival will be announced soon.
