On Saturday night, Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews worked to keep the fire, located between Narrabri and Bingara, on the southern side of the Killarney Gap Road.

“The fire is now burning in steep, heavily timbered country across the Kaputar Range where it is expect to continue burning for a number of days if not weeks,” a NSW RFS spokesperson said.

“Containment lines have been identified to the east and west of the Mount Kaputar National Park and south towards Mount Kaputar itself.

“Dozers have started preparing these trails for back burning operations over coming days.”

Crews started back burning along Killarney Gap Road on Sunday morning, which remains closed, and will continue in both easterly and westerly directions along the road and onto the established containment lines.

Firefighters have been supported by water bombing aircraft as they fight to get the blaze under control.
