The Tamworth teenager goes into the round “unsure” of what to expect after a disrupted preparation thanks to a broken collarbone suffered while on holidays at Sawtell over the new year.
“I had four weeks out, so obviously leading up to this competition it hasn’t been the greatest preparation,” the 15-year-old said.
Back on the bike for about three weeks now, Davis said in some respects the break did benefit him.
“We did do some training without the use of the shoulder, some leg stuff with a vest which did help,” he said.
He consequently is feeling a bit stronger in his legs.
The Penrith round will be the first of seven covering the expanse of the country.
Interspersed among that, Davis will have a couple of title assaults including the ACT titles in a fortnight, next month’s Australian titles in Bunbury, and the world titles in June. The NIAS Lonestar athlete is also contemplating heading over to America at the end of the year to race in the grand nationals.
“There’s lots of races that I’ve got planned to do this year,” Davis said.
“I’m just trying to get as much racing as I can.”
“The more racing you do, the better you are.”
While not up against a big field this weekend, the quality is there, with many of the top riders in the country competing.
“I just want to do my best and see how it goes,” he said.
“I’d like to make the final, so top eight.”
If he can do that, he said, it will be a huge confidence boost for the nationals.
Racing in the 16-years boys, Davis spoke about staying consistent through the motos, which will be used to determine the seedings for the qualifying rounds.
“For me it’s about ‘getting in the battle’,” he said.
“Getting in the mix.”
Another variable this weekend will be the track, which has undergone a few changes.
