The Tamworth Sporting Car Club (TSCC) will hold their first Lap Dash for the year this Sunday at Oakburn Park and with hot conditions expected, organisers said it will make for an “interesting day of racing”.
“I always looking forward to motor racing but not looking forward to the 39 degrees expected,” Shepherd told the Leader on Friday, echoing his competitors thoughts in the process.
Shepherd has been an integral member of the TSCC for 13 years after moving to Tamworth 20 years ago.
Prior to that, he’d been a member of an MG car club in Sydney in his younger years before he became too busy to continue.
“Like everyone else, I had three kids, seven grandkids and all that jazz. Ran out of money,” Shepherd joked.
Then things started to settle down and Shepherd bought his pride and joy to race in the TSCC’s lap dashes.
“When I was 59, which was 13 years ago, I bought an old 1964 EH Holden,” Shepherd said.
Shepherd has his car primed for Sunday’s Lap Dash thanks to the help of Bluey Osborne from Peel Mechanical Centre and Al Barnes from Barnes Smash Repairs.
The elder statesman will go up against a handful of cars in his class and wasn’t expecting a winner’s medal. Not that he minds.
“There’s four or five in our class. I’m probably one of the slower ones,” Shepherd said.
“I don’t car, though. I just go out there to have fun.”
In total, 32 entrants will take part in Sunday’s Lap Dash at Oakburn Park. Entry is free for spectators.
