STEP UP: Armidale will have four teams go to the junior state cup in Port Macquarie this weekend.

A handful of Armidale touch football teams will vie for state success at the massive junior state cup.

An under 12 boys, under 12 girls, under 14 boys and under 16 girls are part of 358 teams who will head to Port Macquarie for the competition which starts this Friday.

It is all about the kids learning touch football, learning the basics of the game and improving their skills.

Armidale will also be represented in the under 18s with Taneika Landsborough playing for Berkeley Vale and Tyler Carson turning out for Forster.

Team coordinator Dean Carson said the sides will be “competitive” but winning is not what the state cup is all about.

“I think they will be competitive and hopefully if we get one or two wins from the weekend it is a positive for the kids.

“They haven't been doing a great deal of training unfortunately.

“Not as much as we would like them to be doing.

“But we are still reasonably confident all teams will get at least one or two wins.

There will also be the chance for players to be picked to go on to play for regional representative teams.
