For the first time, schools from across entire the North West region will take part.

The race is open to students in years 7 to 12 and offers participants a fun, hands-on approach to learning about the human impact on the environment.

Chair of the Sustainable North West Committee, Stephanie Cameron, said this year the event has “captured the hearts of environmental community leaders”.

“The Sustainable North WestEnviro Race is designed to meet many of the criteria set by the Ministry of Education for high school students studying geography and human society and its environment.

“For this reason we’ve changed the event to be held in school hours when whole classes can attend on a day excursion.

“The race will include a number of stations where students will be required to work with experts and volunteers to find the answers to questions, provide their own ideas about living more sustainably and how we can better care for our environment.

 “We are very excited to be offering something to schools where students can talk and learn from many environmental experts from the North West,” Ms Cameron said

“This is going to be a fabulous day and an outstanding opportunity to learn from experts in their field,” Ms Cameron said.

“It’s also a great opportunity for students to network and see firsthand what it’s like to work in the environmental industry – an area that is already so important for this next generation.”

Schools will receive their information packages and entry forms in coming weeks.

Overall entry numbers are limited so early registration is encouraged. 

The race is set down for Friday, March 23, in Bicentennial Park.
