It’s something about the feeling of being surrounded by a crowd of raucous blokes, but knowing that they share a tender love of the Lord Jesus.
They may raise the roof when they sing, but you can hear a pin drop when they pray. And when one of them gets up and shares the things that are deep in his heart, you know you’re in a sacred place.
You’ll see a mix of farmers and financiers, barristers and bikies, students and seniors, but the bond of fellowship embraces them all.
The meeting will not be led by a minister, but by an ordinary bloke.
The Manilla Christian Men’s Club is one such group. The last dinner in December heard from Dan Urquhart, the CEO of G.J.Gardner Homes. Dan also has a profound history of God at work in his life.
Daniel and his wife Natalie came to Tamworth 10 years ago to help a church. But God led them to buy a business.
“Natalie and I knew we were where God wanted us to be, but we had a lot to learn about the balance of business pressure and quality home life,” he said.
“Business people are called by God just as much as ministers. If you really love God, there is a push to become a pastor. But God calls some people to be His presence in the marketplace.
“As businessmen, we have an opportunity to sow good things into people’s lives in whatever field God has chosen us for. Being Christian is about being ethical, being reliable, being humble. It’s about being obedient to where God is leading.
“You may feel you’re not contributing much to the kingdom of God, but if you’re obedient and you’re planted where God wants you, He’ll bring the fruit.”
The next meeting of the Manilla Christian Men’s Club is at 6.30pm on Tuesday, February 13, at the Royal Hotel in the main street of Manilla. The speaker is Dr David Moore, a Tamworth eye doctor who has an amazing story to tell. Cost is $20 and RSVP is essential to mcmc@outlook.com.au.
Alternatively, Tamworth Christian Men meets at Gregory’s on Goonoo Goonoo on Friday, March 16, starting at 6.30pm. The speaker is Phil Weideman from Inverell. The cost is $25 and again, RSVP is essential to 0401 418 864 to allow for the catering.
But there’s more. A weekend teaching conference at Glen Innes on March 9 and 10 will bring together hundreds of Christian men. It’s called “Men at Glen” and can be accessed at www.menatglen.com. Speakers are Gary Millar from Queensland Theological College and former Wallaby and local, Jim Holbeck.
