TAMWORTH residents might notice a different sound on Tuesday night as two Air Force F/A-18A/B Hornet aircraft conduct instrument landing approaches to Tamworth Airport.

The Hornets will conduct circuit training including ‘touch-and-go’ landings between 8.45pm and 10pm.
The Australian Defence Force said the activity addresses the essential pilot training component of landing on land at alternate airfields.
Tamworth is one of the primary diversion airfields for RAAF Base Williamtown, the department said.
The activity is being conducted by No. 2 Operational Conversion Unit, which is the Royal Australian Air Force’s Hornet training squadron where junior pilots progress through their operational conversion training.
This type of approach, an Instrument Landing System approach, assists pilots to land at night or in poor weather conditions, the department said.
A spokesperson said noise reduction and the environment are vital considerations in the planning and conduct of military activity, and Air Force appreciates the ongoing support of the Tamworth community during these training activities.
