It's understood the glitch may have been the result of an underground fibre optic cable being cut at Barraba.
Businesses in Tamworth, Manilla and Barraba reported slow to non-existent internet access and little to no phone coverage, particularly around noon, to The Leader.
It's understood people in Barraba were among the worst affected by the incident.
Residents there reported having "no contact with the outside world" early yesterday afternoon.
