NRL legends David Peachey and Nathan Blacklock attended the event as guest speakers and spoke passionately about the need to address the issue of domestic violence and the destruction it caused to families and communities.
Peachey spoke about a new anti-domestic program he is part of, that’s rolling out across the state to some of the places where domestic violence is most prevalent.
It is understood the program will operate in 18 of the 20 places where domestic violence offences are having the most serious impact.
The program has the backing of the NSW government.
Tamworth’s Local Domestic Violence Interagency Committee hosted last night’s event, which had a Halloween theme, at West Tamworth’s Granny Munro Park.
Organisers said this year’s Reclaim the Night event was a rally, rather than the usual march, because they were directing the message more specifically towards families.
The local domestic violence committee decided on the family-friendly event to recognise the impact violence has upon women, families and the community as a whole.
Reclaim the Night marches and rallies have been held internationally each year in late October since 1978.
The aim is to allow communities to come together, speak out about violence against women and gain strength from each other.
