In a bid to ensure Tamworth’s transient camping community avoid catastrophe, NSW Fire and Rescue have urged people to pick up some tucker in town rather than run the risk of cooking at home, under the influence.
It’s nothing to scoff at for Superintendent Tom Cooper, who said more than 50 per cent of fires are started in the kitchen.

“Each year, around 200 people get admitted into hospital with open flame burns through fire actually touching their skin,” he said.
“And 60 per cent of those people who actually present to hospital say that they’ve been cooking and they’ve been under the influence of alcohol.”
The firies will be checking campsites to ensure caravans are fitted with smoke alarms.
