The win, however, was not good enough to book Tamworth a spot in Friday’s final. A 20-run loss to Lismore on Wednesday prevented that from happening.
Against Penrith, Tamworth won the toss and batted at Lambert Park. They were bowled out for 122 off 45 overs in the 50-over clash.
Oscar Spinks (42) and Lachlan Weseirski (34) top-scored. They came together with Tamworth in dire trouble at 6-48 – their 38-run seventh-wicket partnership a “match-winner in the context of the match”, Tamworth co-coach Bede Maher said.
Penrith were dismissed for 76 in 34 overs, with Davidson and Mead capturing 4-16 off nines overs and 3-5 off seven overs.
Against Lismore, Davidson and Mead claimed 2-9 off four overs and 3-2 off six overs.
Commenting on Mead’s performance against Penrith, Maher said: “That’s the quickest Joey’s bowled on a consistent line and length and at great pace. And Jess did well. She bowled a consistent line and length.”
Tamworth co-coach Grant Ryan added: “All the [Tamworth] bowlers bowled well today but those two [Mead and Davidson] were both outstanding the past two days.”
Tamworth would have made the final had they beaten Lismore, who made 83 and then bowled Tamworth out for 63.
Maher and Ryan said poor batting had cost the side this week, although pitches that were “a bit underprepared” did not help.
