WHAT a sensational swim by Thomas Micallef last week when he broke the 4 x 50 metre medley 14 years boys record previously held by Dean Hancock since 1983. Thomas shaved nearly seven seconds off the time when he stopped the clock at the 3 minute, 6.40 second mark.
THE Squash Club held their championship finals on Tuesday night where Michael Sweeney, Justin Gibson, Scotty Kermode and Jack Wake defeated Heath Gleeson, Melissa Eliott, Lachlan Laurie and Michael Hoy in the respective grand finals from A Grade to D Grade. All the details will be revealed next week.
CONGRATULATIONS to Adam Dark who racked up his third hat-trick of snooker and billiards championship wins after he teamed up with his father Neil to defeat arch rivals Charlie Brown and Andrew McGuffog in the paris final last week, Down 1-0 Team Dark bounced back to win 2-1.
VETERAN runner Taddy Macfarlane recently competed in a 10-kilometre event at the Entrance at the end of last month. Taddy won his over 70 years age division, finished 99th out of 512 overall and was the 81st male to complete the journey out of the 221 that participated. Taddy stopped the clock in 52 minutes 18 seconds – a bit disappointing by his own expectations.
ROUND 10 of the Walcha Men’s Cup is scheduled for this Saturday where competition leader Round Swamp take on second-placed Colts at the Park while Kentucky travel to Uralla Sports complex to do battle with the home side. Swamp currently sit on 42 points followed by Colts 36 Urall 32 and Kentucky 24.
A 133 fourth-wicket partnership between Paul Pittman and Mitchell Scrivener laid a solid platform for Colts to make 219 last Saturday. Paul Pittman picked up man of the match honour for his effort of 74 runs, while Mitch knocked up 52. The boys scored a run per ball during their 21-over stint at the crease.
POULTRY Farmers of the Week: Dan Hunt (golden), Jacob Sherrin, Ben Cross (both bronze), Nick Schultz, Brad Partridge, Anthony Weise and Beau Abraham, while Pat Kelly retired before he scored a run.
News from the pitch
COMPETITION leaders Round Swamp defeated Kentucky by four wickets and Colts cruised home against Uralla by 114 runs at the Park when Round 9 of the Walcha News Cup was played last Saturday.
Swamp restricted Kentucky to a modest total of 68 thanks mainly to openers Luke Wellings who snared the first four wickets and Liam Brennan who captured three victims late in the innings.
Opener Lachie Fletcher grabbed 2/13, Ben France took 1/20, while Wellings finished with 4/7 and Brennan with 3/9.
The only two Kentucky batsmen to reach double figures were Wayne Boyd and Michael Aspinall who made 16 runs each.
In reply, Swamp lost six wickets before they passed their assignment in the 16th over after France contributed 17, Thomas Hoy 16 and Fletcher 10.
Most successful Kentucky bowler was Aaron Johnson with 3/15. Opener Brad Partridge took 2/10 while Beau Abraham picked up the remaining wicket.
At the Park, Colts amassed a total of 219 after Paul Pittman and Mitchell Scrivener made major contributions, putting on an impressive 133-run fourth-wicket partnership.
Pittman amassed 74 runs and Scrivener made 52, whereas opener Ed Blomfield chipped in 28 and Brad Dade managed 22.
Star performer with the cricket ball was Eric Lemessurier who captured 6/48, Cameron Wood took 2/48 while opening bowler Cameron Kelly and Nick Schultz both claimed a victim each.
Uralla lost wickets at regular intervals and were 6/52 at one stage before Kelly and Blaine Moore put on a 40-run seventh wicket partnership to boost the team’s flagging total.
Kelly top scored with 26 and Moore was the only other batsman to reach double figures after he amassed a total of 17.
Best Colts bowler for the day was Jacob Sherrin who sent down eight overs to grab 4 for 17.
Openers Thor Crombie and Sam Martin picked up a brace of wickets each, while Cameron Little was the other wicket taker.
