Lachie Cameron produced an innings to savour and marvel at on Friday night as the Town Heat finally wrested the Charity Cup from the Country Thunder’s grasp.
Opening up for the town side, Cameron lit up Narrabri’s Collins Park smacking an unbeaten 149 as the Heat compiled an imposing 4-231 from their twenty overs.
Evoking memories of Chris Lynn in last season’s Big Bash, Cameron plundered 14 fours and 10 sixes in his stunning 70-ball knock, one of his sixes clearing the ground and landing on the opposite side of the road.
His highest ever score, eclipsing his 121 against RSL back in 2014, it is the continuation of what has been a fruitful season with the bat so far for the Civeo skipper.
Before the weekend in six first grade knocks he had amassed 329 runs at an average of 65.80 with a highest score of 119. He also scored an unbeaten 89 for Central North on the final day of the recent NSW Country Championships in Inverell.
“That was probably the best I’ve felt batting ever,” Cameron reflected on that knock against North Coastal.
Alongside his first War Veterans Cup ton (2010 against Gunnedah) it’s probably the innings he is proudest of too.
“It was a different sort of innings. I didn’t bat like a cowboy,” he said.
He really had to dig in, and work hard for the runs.
On Friday night circumstances permitted him to be a bit more cavalier.
Out twice in the last two years in the 90’s, Cameron breezed through the so-called ‘nervous 90s’ – not that he really any idea.
“Wardy (Brendan Ward) was on the mike as mc and I thought he was geeing me up,” he said.
“Normally I count my runs but I sort of lost count. It just got away on me.”
“I remember him (Ward) saying I was on 94. I hit a six the next ball and then they all started clapping me for 100.”
Again closing in on his 150, Cameron was unaware that he was approaching the milestone.
“It just seemed to go so quick. I thought I was on about 120,” he said.
“I came off and was taking my pads off and Wardy put it over mic- Lachie Cameron 149no.”
Not that he could have done much more finishing the innings with a six.
The Heat then restricted the Thunder to 6-160 in reply, Cameron rolling the arm over for one over, albeit unsuccessfully.
Coby Cornish top-scored for the Thunder with 53 while Chris Sargent was unbeaten on 49.
The game supports a different local charity each year. This year the combined efforts of the local community raised Thank you firstly to all the sponsors of the event, assisting the Narrabri Shire Youth Shack by raising $15,000 for the Narrabri Shire Youth Shack.
