It is the first time the event has been held in the southern hemisphere.
It will feature teams from Bahrain, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, India and Pakistan.
Tentpegging is an equestrian sport based on light horse skills and tactics, which recently celebrated the 100 years since the Charge of Beersheba.
Teams of four riders gallop in unison past four pegs in the ground.
Points are awarded for both retrieving the peg with either a sword or a lance, as well as team drill.
The Australian Tentpegging Association was formed in 1981 to oversee the sport and has teams competing in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and South Australia
The top three teams in the qualifier in Tamworth next January will be invited the ITPF World Cup to be held in Moscow, Russia, in 2018.
Over the weekend, the Australian Tent Pegging Team held a World Cup Qualifier Training day with the aid of an international judge in Tamworth to get ready to tackle the international event.
The Australian team rode some of the horses that will be used for the event and honed their skills.
