The North West girls have missed the State CHS Girls Water Polo Championship semi-finals at Glenbrook after a stumble in their final pool game.
The Jenny Steepe-coached side were in contention to finish fourth heading into the clash against Riverina but went down 8-5.
It followed a 12-1 win over Sydney South West and 7-4 loss to Sydney East.
“We just ran out of steam. We’d had that big game against Sydney East,” Steepe said.
And not much break between the two games.
They were always chasing the game, trailing 3-1 at the first break, 3-2 at half-time and then 5-4 at three-quarter-time.
“They just got away from us,” Steepe said.
But while disappointed not to make the semi-finals, Steepe said they were outstanding against Sydney East.
“That was a brilliant game,” she said.
EARLIER
North West coach Jenny Steepe was preparing for a tough second at the State CHS Girls Water Polo carnival at Glenbrook.
Steepe couldn’t have been happier with how her side started the carnival on Tuesday backing up a 12-1 win over Sydney West with a 12-3 win over South Coast.
“I was really pleased with them. They did a lot of good things today,” Steepe said, noting that usually they only beat Sydney West by a few goals.
“Everyone got in and had a good swim and got a good feel for the carnival and good feel for each other.”
She said senior players Mikalya Gross, Giaan White and Lucy Hofman were very dominant in the first game, but the younger girls really came to the fore in the second.
“It was really pleasing to see the younger girls step up,” Steepe said mentioning the likes of Hannah Irwin and Sarah Hofman.
Both are only in Year 7 but “held their own against 16/17-year olds”.
As their scorelines reflect, their defence was impressive.
“Their defence has been very good. We’ve done a full pool press,” Steepe said.
On the back of that they were able to force turnovers and through their counter-attack turn those into goals.
“We’ll have a tougher day tomorrow. We’ve got Hunter and Sydney North plus our grudge match with North Coast,” Steepe said.
