Davey’s a rangy fighter with reach and power – who is dropping in weight to 81 kilograms to fight this week – while Nolan’s a 57-kilogram boxer who packs a punch with speed to burn.
However, the Black 'N' Blue Boxing Gunnedah fighters both share common goals.
In the immediate future for them is the Amateur Boxing League Australian titles this week in Melbourne.
The pair will fight at the knockout competition after winning Global Australian titles a couple weeks ago where they both gained valuable experience.
“It was good. The main thing about that fight was I wanted to test my fitness and it showed me I needed to improve,” Nolan said.
“I’d rather a hard fight than an easy fight – at least I’m learning something.”
“It was a solid fight,” Davey said of his fight.
“I’d had 11 months out of the ring so it was good to get back in and get one under the belt. I needed a good win before heading down [to the ABL titles].”
Further down the track, Nolan and Davey both want to turn pro.
The ABL titles will be one of the first steps on the journey toward professional boxing and Nolan was confident.
“I think I’m at a point where I can bring home the title,” Nolan said.
“I’m keen. I’m ready to get in the ring again.
“I want to get a fair few fights in first and then I’ll be thinking about going professional some time next year.”
Davey’s confidence was just as high Nolan’s.
He knows he’s done the work – over his time fighting he’s dropped close to 40 kilograms – to win.
“In my mind, I should win it if I put my head down,” he said.
“I’ve been training hard twice a day, I’m feeling good, fit. I’ve got no excuses.”
Davey was also planning to get as much boxing in as possible as he eyes off a professional career.
“It’s something I’ll look to do in 2018,” he said.
“I’ll hopefully get another 10 fights in as quick as I can, see how I’m looking and go into the pros.”
Nolan and Davey share another thing in common: Black 'N' Blue Boxing Gunnedah has brought them to town.
Nolan made the move to Gunnedah from Dubbo while Davey travels from Narrabri to Gunnedah to train each week.
Both boxers agree training with David Syphers at the gym in Gunnedah has been worth it with both continually improving.
The ABL titles start on Thursday, November 23.
