On a miserably wet day at Tamworth Rugby Park on Saturday, five spirited matches of rugby league were played as part of concerted push to get more women playing the game.

The second round of Group 4’s women’s nines competition, staged in conjunction with other CRL-run nines competitions in NSW, saw four teams play two matches each.
In the first game, Uralla and Werris Creek drew 4-4, with North Tamworth posting two tries in a 12-0 win over Bendemeer in the next clash.
That was followed by Werris Creek beating South West 12-0 and Norths edging Uralla 14-12.
In the final game, Bendemeer scored two second-half tries to defeat South West 10-4.
Bendemeer coach Anthony Hammond, in his second season in charge, labelled the nines a success.
He said: “It’s good for the girls. They’ve [Bendemeer] got a couple of players who haven’t played before … They’re enjoying themselves, so it’s good.”
Hammond – the incoming coach of the Bendy men’s side – said he had a new-look women’s outfit this year and he saluted his charges for their commitment.
On Saturday, he was most pleased about the way the side rebounded from the Norths loss.
“We’ve got a good side – the girls have gelled together pretty well,” he said. “We were pretty confident after, like, playing Norths. They only beat us by two tries.
“It was a good effort from the girls in the first game and we were pretty confident coming into the second game.”
Hammond would like to see the nines continues beyond this year.
“Like I said, it’s a good comp and they’re good to come down and watch. Girls enjoy themselves,” he said. “So, yeah, I hope to see it go for a few more years, actually.”
