City head into the second day with first innings points already in the bag and 35 overs – weather depending – to try and build on their 55 run lead.
“I always wanted to get them (runs) last week,” Smith said.
“I wasn’t really thinking about the weather at that point. It’s just nice to get first innings points in week one if they are within reach.”
They will resume at 4-178 with Tom Fitzgerald unbeaten on 53 and plenty of arsenal in the sheds should they look to go after quick runs.
Whatever approach they take Smith’s plan is to only bat once and then hand over to the bowlers to hopefully repeat what they did in the first innings.
“That’s been probably our best bowling performance since I’ve been here,” Smith said.
They were smart with their bowling and patient in the field.
Lachlan Cooke, Troy Hearfield, Dan Whale and Ross Steyn all come back in for the second day, although Steyn and Whale won’t be able to bat in the first innings.
