On Wednesday January 31, 2018 the Baton will arrive in the city from Gunnedah on its way to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
It will be carried in relay by 15 Batonbearers on a route from the Riverside Sporting Complex and through the CBD to arrive at a community celebration in Bicentennial Park.
The first Batonbearer will depart at 4.45pm from the corner of Carter Street and Solander Drive towards Bridge Street. Successive Batonbearers will continue across the Peel River Bridge to the CBD. The relay will turn left into Kable Avenue then take Darling Street, before turning right into Peel Street and travelling six blocks to Roderick Street and then Kable Avenue.
It will be a memorable experience. Come and see the Baton pass by and join the community celebration in Bicentennial Park.
- Mayor Col Murray
Tamworth Region Mayor Col Murray said the route of about 3km will give local residents a great opportunity to join the excitement of the Queen’s Baton Relay and cheer on the Batonbearers.
“It will be a memorable experience,” he said. “Come and see the Baton pass by and join the community celebration in Bicentennial Park.”
The community celebration will start at 5pm and will include a range of fun activities for children, from free jumping castle, food stalls, music from Tamworth Brass Band and Tamworth and District Highland Society Pipe Band to performances by Tamworth City Dance Academy.
The Baton will arrive at about 5.30pm and there will be a short formal ceremony before audience members will have a chance to see the Baton up close, before it departs at 6pm and the celebration continues until 7pm.
Batonbearers will be informed next month of the street-specific location where they will carry the Baton.
Details will be updated at gc2018.com/qbr in the weeks before the Baton arrives into a celebration community.
The Queen’s Baton will arrive on the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018, where His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales will declare the Games officially open.
