Allan Barnes holds a one-point lead over Kees van der Horst leading into Sunday’s lapdash at Oakburn Park.
Stephen Lynch is also in the hunt sitting just another point behind van der Horst.
Taking out the championship isn’t as simple as just winning this Sunday.
There will be 10 points up for grabs for the winner of each of the classes – the top three drivers all race in separate classes – while the top three overall times claim three, two and one points respectively.
The riders’ plan for Sunday is much simpler.
“You really have to win your class and then get outright points,” van der Horst said.
Adding further to the championship equation is the chance of rain – it’s expected for most of Friday and Saturday before clearing on Sunday – and a change in format.
Usually drivers do three laps and their best time is taken down.
However, on Sunday the racers will have to be on their game as the winner will be decided by their total time for the three laps.
“You have to do three perfect laps instead of doing the one perfect lap,” Barnes said.
Another highlight on the day will be the drives of Peter Watson and Bill Ainsworth.
Both drivers are in their 80s, drive Amaroo Clubmans and prove age is no barrier.
The first lap starts at 9.30am and will run until roughly 3pm.
Entry is free with a canteen running on the day.
