Tamworth’s place in history as the first city in the southern hemisphere to light its streets using electricity 129 years ago, was celebrated on Thursday night.

The Tamworth Powerstation Museum was the focal point for a visual spectacular of art projections, called ‘Light Up The Night’.
Families were encouraged to pull up a blanket or a chair on the Community Centre Parade Ground and enjoy the show.
Museum Director Bridget Guthrie said the special night event was an exciting addition to anniversary celebrations, while the project has also engaged with local artists to produce some more permanent pieces.
“Using public art to tell this social history engages the community and provides a focus for local narratives,” she said.
Tamworth Regional Council secured a $32,400 grant through Arts NSW towards the cost of the two-year project to design, develop and implement public art based on the City of Light theme.
The day also saw school groups treated to guided tours of the Museum, with the volunteers keen to show off their amazing collection of more than 6500 items.
