The 21-year-old provisional driver was travelling north along Goonoo Goonoo Road at an unknown speed when he lost control of the vehicle about 3.10am Sunday, according to police.
“(The driver) crossed the grass median strip, destroying a tree, before continuing a further 70 metres across two lanes of traffic, before colliding with a guard rail, narrowly missing a light pole,” a police spokesman told The Leader.
“The impact with the guard rail caused extensive damage to 10 metres of guard rail.”
Police attended and conducted a roadside breath test of the driver, who returned a positive reading.
He was taken to Tamworth police station, where he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.029, police allege.
He was charged with negligent diving and PCA.
