The Scone trainer saddled up Professor Marx to win the sprint – who came from back in the field with a brilliant rails-hugging ride from Greg Ryan – and then snared the Coonabarabran Cup just over half an hour later with Red Knot when Serg Lisnyy led all the way on the race favourite.
It was Lisnyy’s fourth ride on the million-dollar yearling for a third win.
“He ran well, just stuck on,” Lisnyy said after the win.
“It was good for Serg,” Northam agreed.
“He’s had four rides on him for three wins and a second now. The horse likes him.
“Very happy to win two features on any cup day.”
Earlier Greg Ryan had produced a much different ride on Professor Marx to win the Cup Day Sprint.
“A really good ride too. Been a good little horse for us,” Northam said.
It was the gelding’s sixth win in 26 starts and will now look for another “similar” race, Northam said.
It was Greg Ryan’s second win of the day on a horse he had ridden at Scone and Coonamble in previous outings.
“He’s a nice horse to ride,” Greg Ryan said.
“He picks up and finds for you.”
Colt Prosser made the long trek from Wauchope worthwhile when Metreeater dashed home late to win the Acacia Motor Lodge Class 1 Handicap (1400m).
The four-year-old gelding son of Ready’s Image was having his 18th start and made it win number two for Prosser.
“He won his maiden in fine style but then went off the boil,” Prosser said after the win.
“I did step him up to 1700 metres but he didn’t see it out so we freshened him up for this.”
Tamworth trainer Sue Grills, who won the first race with Moonlight Spy and the third with The Gun, also had good success on the day with her new apprentice Hyosik Lee, a 21-year-old Korean rider who had ridden 53 winners before Monday’s cup meeting, excelling on both.
