A lack of players threatened to derail next week’s over 70s carnival in Tamworth but some quick thinking saved the day.
The carnival will now allow players aged 67 years and older to play to boost numbers amongst the teams.
“A lot of the guys that started off playing have gone through to the 70s division but there’s not enough across the state to qualify it [this carnival] as a separate 70s,” Tamworth over 70s player Mike Cashman said.
“We’ve made a concession for this carnival – that’s on next Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday in Tamworth – for over 67s to produce enough players.”
Tamworth will field a team along with the Western Wildfires – made up of players from the Central West region – the Bushrangers and the All Stars which are both composite teams.
The tournament will be the start of a string of carnivals for over 67s.
Carnivals in Quirindi, Newcastle and Penrith will follow the three-day Tamworth event.
The carnivals will be a great warm-up for Cashman who has state duties fast approaching.
“The NSW team going to Adelaide in November is a very strong side,” Cashman said.
“We won it in 2015 and I think we’re a really good chance again. Queensland will probably be our main opposition.
“Last year we came third but looking at the side we’ve got on paper, I think we’ve got a fairly good chance of winning it.”
