THE identify of remains found on a Collarenebri property last year have been confirmed as belonging to missing Queensland truck driver James Douglas Whyte.
After more than a year of waiting for forensic test results, officers have closed their investigation into the disappearance of Mr Whyte who went missing in November 2003.
Mr Whyte was 31 and was believed and was believed to have disappeared on the grounds of Collymongle Station.
At the time police searched the area extensively but were unable to find Mr Whyte and Strike Force Tanunda was formed to investigate his disappearance.
It wasn’t until September last year that a farmworker found the remains on the grounds of Collymongle Station. During a Coronial Inquest yesterday, Deputy State Coroner Sharon Freund found the remains were those of Mr Whyte however the manner and cause of death remained unknown.
According to Castlereagh Local Area Command Crime Manager, Inspector Tony Mureau, it was unfortunate that Mr Whyte’s family and police would never know what happened to him.
“This has been a long running investigation and I would like to acknowledge the patience and understanding of James’s parents along with the considerable work by Detective Sergeant Russell Pitt who lead the initial investigation,” he said.
