Tane Chatfield died in Tamworth hospital on Friday, two days after being rushed from prison at the neighbouring Tamworth Correctional Centre.
The 22-year-old inmate, who has family ties in Armidale and Tamworth, was being held on remand and was facing several robbery charges in the district court.
A public GoFund Me page has been set up and is aiming to raise $15,000 for the family of the father-of-one.
The family of Mr Chatfield is calling for answers on the circumstances surrounding his death, with the #JusticeforTane trending on social media, following a public protest outside the jail on the weekend.
Police have said the man’s death is not being treated as suspicious but any death in custody is reviewed by the NSW Coroner.
