Lightning strikes and wind gusts wreaked havoc on the region’s electricity grids, with 1323 premises in East and North Tamworth thrown into darkness just after 3am from a “suspected lightning strike”, while residents at Curlewis and Glen Innes were also affected.
Essential Energy spokesman David Crough said that crews “discovered a fault near the corner of Carthage and Murray streets.”
“The network was rerouted around the fault and power was restored to 1230 customers at 5.09am, and to the remaining 93 at 8.53am when repairs had been made,” Mr Crough said.
Meanwhile the technical issues at Sydney Airport saw three flights delayed and another two cancelled in Tamworth.
Airport manager Julie Stewart confirmed that one Qantas and one Virgin flight had been cancelled, although expected “business as usual” once the final delayed flight departed on Monday afternoon.
