About 40 women decked themselves out in full skirts, cardigans and bobby socks for their ’50s-themed lunch at Carmen’s restaurant today.

Lawrie and Shelley Minson entertained with songs from the era, including Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Johnny O’Keefe and Patsy Cline tunes.

Shelley Minson, as well-known for her vintage look as her music career, was also called upon to judge the best-dressed women.

Club president Narelle Powdrell said it was a great chance to reflect on the past year’s achievements from the 70-strong club members, who focused on one important goal.

“Our aim is always to raise money for the Smith Family,” Mrs Powdrell said.

“We support two disadvantaged pupils – and we’re looking at supporting a third one – through Learning for Life.”

She said the club invested about $1000 a year into each anonymous student per year, and anything left over also went to the Smith Family.

“Whatever other money we raise goes to the Smith Family as well,” she said.

“We had a really great Melbourne Cup day and a fashion parade in May, which raised money, and we’re very lucky with people donating food and so on ...

“We don’t go in for really big fundraising events, but we do a little bit here and there, and it’s surprising how it adds up.

“It’s great thing that these disadvantaged kids are getting this support and they can go on to higher education – I think that’s very important.”
