The Regional Marriage Equality Roadshow 2.0 is coming to Tamworth this weekend, with people from all sides of politics coming together to support the cause.

Mr Hansen said issue had moved past political boundaries.

“More so in the last few months, where we’ve seen a really solid effort from people within the Liberals and Nationals, who are being quite vocal about their support for marriage equality,” he said.

“It’s really moved beyond political lines, showing it’s not a political football, it’s not a political issue. It’s more about the topic itself, rather than who's going to score a goal first.”

On Saturday night, road show will be at the Tamworth Hotel from 7pm. Mr Hansen said the event would be a “casual way to show support”.

“This is to show that this will be a non-issue – this is what people do and will be doing, after the vote passes,” he said.

“They’ll be standing right next to you at the pub, enjoying a beer the same way as everyone else. Nothing will change, they may just have a ring on a different finger.”

The roadshow will also hold a gathering at Tamworth Town Hall from 9am on Sunday, however it’s “not a march or a demonstration”.

“It is just to be present, to let people be aware that there is support and that it’s OK for there to be support west of the Great Dividing Range,” Mr Hansen said. 

After a “very brief” speech, people will be encouraged to go about their daily business.

“Just go down the street and do whatever you would normally do – buy something, talk to someone, get a coffee at your local cafe,” Mr Hansen said.

“The whole message in that is, this is exactly what is going to happen, should marriage equality pass tomorrow – everything that happens today, except some more people can get married.”

Nationals MLC Trevor Khan, has “long been a supporter of marriage equality in Australia”. His son, Nick, is part of the marriage equality roadshow.

“I stand with my son, Nick, in calling on Tamworth residents and our federal parliamentarians to vote ‘yes’ for equality and fairness for all Australians,” Mr Khan said.

“The expression of love and commitment through marriage ought to be available to all couples, regardless of sexual orientation.”
