St Mary’s provides a learning environment that is safe, caring and respectful of individual differences while challenging all students to perform at their potential in all their endeavours, according to principal Max Quirk.
“In recent years there have been many new initiatives to enhance the academic achievements of the students,” he said. “The results from the 2016 HSC were particularly pleasing with eight students achieving a total of 14 Band 6s and Sophie Perkins being named College Dux with an ATAR of 94.4.
“An analysis of NAPLAN data also shows the growth achieved by St Mary’s students from Year 7 to Year 9 is consistently above state average.”
This year the school has focused on enhancing the learning culture of the school by developing collaborative teaching and learning practices.
“We have been building the teaching and leadership capacity of all staff,” he said. “And nurturing the holistic development of each student.”
The pastoral care program has been enhanced in 2017 with the introduction of Mentor Groups. At the start of each day all students meet with their mentor teachers to focus on their individual goals and prepare for upcoming learning challenges.
Early indications are that students are making good use of this time and it is an effective strategy for improving learning outcomes.
