Natalie Chin and Jake Lynch were among the 19,000 students expected to take part in the annual Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition.
About 323 NSW regional schools participated in the competition where students were required to answer 35 mathematical questions.
But there was a catch, they had to do it without the use of calculators, rulers or any mathematical instruments.
Newcastle Branch Manager Julie Callander said she was excited to have so many local students taking part this year and hoped everyone had a great time during the challenge. Students from Carinya Christian School were challenged by the test but thoroughly enjoyed it.
“It is good for students to be exposed to external tests so they are given a broader view of the mathematical world,” Carinya Christian School Year five and six Coordinator, Karen Ambler said.
“Many of our students embraced the challenges that were presented to them and they enjoyed the process.”
“It is a positive challenge as it really helps me grow in my mathematics” said Carinya student Breanna Knott.
This year is the 37th year since the competition began.
