It’s not the most familiar story in horse racing circles but that’s just what a racing syndicate did for this year’s $12,000 Louth Cup.
Scott Waters, Riley Gibson and Ethan Watts from Tamworth, Tom Henry from Ebor and Mark Ward from Condobolin make up the syndicate who pulled off the whirlwind feat.
The quintet bought Streak On for $5250 following her win at Geelong on July 18, which bumped up her price, with the aim of winning the Louth Cup on August 12.
Streak On was then put in trainer Sue Grills’ care who worked her magic on the mare.
“We didn't have to do much because Sue did it all,” Waters said.
“All credit has to go to Sue, she got her right,” Gibson added.
The eight-year-old, a $2.30 favourite, saluted for the syndicate – and broke the cup record in the process – before being sold straight after the race for $4000.
While Streak On was sold for a $1250 loss, the winner’s purse of $7,180 along with the fellas buying her in the calcutta the night before more than made up for the loss.
“In the calcutta, we paid a record price, so we were reasonably confident and then she broke the Louth Cup track record, so two records were broken,” Gibson said.
This year was the third time the syndicate has taken a horse to the Louth Races.
The two previous outings saw the group take home a win and a second placing.
Waters and Gibson said they syndicate would be back at Louth next year.
