An East Tamworth street was blocked off as residents watched police swoop on the garage of a Bligh St home.
The drama began when officers spotted a silver Toyota Camry travelling at high speed on the New England Highway south of Bendemeer towards the city shortly before 4pm.
The chase turned off the highway into the Upper Moore Creek area and went towards the Tamworth hospital on Johnston St.
It ended when the driver stopped the vehicle in the driveway of a home in Marius St about 5pm. Police arrested the man at a house on the corner of Marius and Bligh Streets. He had already allegedly assaulted a woman at a neighbouring property.
“It will be alleged that he assaulted a woman at one of the neighbouring properties and she is being treated by paramedics,”
Oxley police crime manager Chief Inspector Phil O’Reilly said. Plain-clothed and uniformed officers joined to track down the man with the help of the community, he said.
“It was a significant team effort here, and we are very fortunate in we were assisted by the community in locating him very swiftly,” Chief Inspector O’Reilly said.
“It is good to know that this man is now in custody and the community should feel safe about that.
“We believe the man may have been involved in some other offences in the New England local area command a short time prior to that.”
Investigators from Armidale were in Tamworth late yesterday to help Oxley detectives.
