En route to winning the John Dewhurst Memorial Handicap Road Race on Saturday, Daniel Nash passed his father, Malcolm “Chum” Nash, after the latter started in an earlier group.

The younger Nash, a 24-year-old triathlete, seemed reluctant to confirm that fact when he spoke via the phone on Sunday as he climbed a mountain he didn’t know the name of “just on the other side of Flagstaff”, after winning a Tamworth Triathlon Club duathlon earlier in the day.
When asked if his father said anything as he passed him in Saturday’s 60-kilometre Tamworth Cycle Club event, the Tamworthian said no words were exchanged.
“He doesn’t tell me what to do a lot, but he’s definitely shown me what to do. That’s for sure,” Daniel said, when asked about his father’s motivational effect on him.
Daniel’s victory in the race – which started at Loomberah Hall and looped around Dungowan and Nemingha before finishing back at the hall – created a nice symmetry with his father.
Malcolm won the race in 2014, the last time it was held.
Along with Tamworth, Inverell and Armidale were represented in the field of 16 riders. Daniel started in the second last group.
He said he broke away and then held off a group of “eight or 10” riders to win by about five metres. Ash Smith of Tamworth and Brett Rees of Armidale came second and third.
Daniel said: “I had a couple of club race wins this year but I haven’t won a race like that before in cycling.”
He will compete in Ironman Western Austrlaia in Busselton in December.
