A trend where increasing numbers of Tamworth residents are wanting to upsize their backyard shed or garage is being considered as part of an update to Tamworth Regional Council’s (TRC) planning framework.
TRC team leader development assessments, Lucy Walker, said there is continuing strong demand for large sheds.
“We are consistently being asked to consider varying the existing standards because local residents are wanting bigger sheds – to house caravans, additional vehicles and various equipment,” she said.
Council is now looking for feedback on its suggested amendments to its development control plan to address matters which have arisen in the past year.
These include: the trend for large sheds, triple garages, minimum lot sizes in low density areas, telecommunications, ensuring future owners of new lots created near poultry farms recognise they may be subjected to negative impacts and the expansion of the conservation area in East Tamworth to include the north-east side of North St from Hyman St to Janison St.
The main purpose of a development control plan is to provide guidelines to anyone proposing to undertake development.
The Tamworth regional development control plan 2010 - adopted in October 2010 - is reviewed regularly to ensure its planning guidelines remain consistent with council’s objectives which are formed in consultation with the community and the development industry.
The public exhibition of the proposed amendments to the Tamworth regional development control plan 2010 will start on Saturday, August 7.
The document will be accessible through council’s website, as well as printed versions at council offices. Written comments will be able to be made either be sending an email to trc@tamworth.nsw.gov.au or letter to: The General Manager, PO Box 555, Tamworth 2340.
