About 11.45pm on Tuesday, the man woke to voices outside the back of his property and chased an offender who turned on him and brandished a knife.
The victim went back to his house and discovered goods including a safe as well as his Holden Commodore had been stolen.
Police said he wasn’t injured during the break-in.
Police were alerted and patrolled the area and later found the stolen vehicle dumped in Woodward St.
It has been seized for forensic examination.
Police said it was damaged and believe someone might have seen the vehicle or the offenders acting suspiciously in and around the Crown St, Gipps St and Mathews St area between 11pm and midnight on Tuesday.
A crime scene was also set-up at the Crown St house, which was combed for forensic officers.
Police said they have information to suggest the stolen Commodore ute might have been involved in a crash with another vehicle shortly before midnight.
“The recovered vehicle may have been damaged from a collision and we appeal for any information regarding a collision with a blue Holden ute between 11:45pm and 12 midnight,” an Oxley Police spokesperson said.
“The safe has not been recovered and we appeal for information from the public regarding any person who has sighted or located a medium sized personal safe.”
On Wednesday, police doorknocked the neighbourhood in a bid to find witnesses.
Anyone with information on the aggravated break-and-enter is being urged to contact Tamworth police on 6768 2999.
