The three week competition mixes up the players from the four A grade teams and sees them joining forces to raise money for charity.
The Regional Australia Bank Reds came out on top with two wins from their three games. They just edged out the North West Locksmiths Blacks on runs differential, with the Battery World Pin Stripes taking out third and the McCulloch Bulk Haulage Greys fourth.
The big winner though was the four selected charities.
MND Australia will receive $1,000 thanks to the Reds, the Cancer Council $500 and Batyr and Riding for the Disabled $250 each.
Ruth Loseby, the coordinator for the local Tamworth MND Support group, spoke to the Reds team before they went out to play on Saturday and was very appreciative of all the support the Tamworth Baseball Association players were giving to all the charitable organisations.
“It’s a great effort by all those involved and every dollar goes to support those people in the community who are dealing with major upheaval and changes to not only their lives, but their families too,” she said.
The B grade competition has been continuing as normal.
On Saturday, the Armidale Outlaws returned to the winners list after back to back losses with a thumping 20 run win over Gunnedah Giants 23–3.
Newcomer Brodie Groth had his first outing on the mound for the Outlaws and proved to be a handy thrower, despite some early errors gifting the Giants a three run lead.
It was all one way traffic after that early spark though, with the Outlaws keeping the pressure on with the bats, amassing a huge lead they never surrendered.
Coach Dale Smith was happy that his players found some form again with the bat and played pretty faultless baseball after the first innings.
In another maroon filled derby game, it was the Cougars who triumphed, this time over the Cavaliers in a tight contest 10–9.
Both sides collected eight hits each on the day.
Dan Tadman had a great day at the plate with a triple and a double and two RBI’s, as did Ben Ridgewell and Ayden Bowen with two hits apiece.
Ridgewell also pitched his allocated four innings, only giving up three hits and striking out five hitters in a 62 pitch effort.
Toby Bowen finished off the tense final two innings and held on to get his team the win.
The Cavs were best served by Gavin Austin and Ashton Williams with two hits each, and for pitchers Stevan Young and Brian Hopton they would be looking for a tighter fielding effort next game to keep the unearned run tally down.
The win leapfrogs the Cougars up into 3rd place on the B Grade ladder behind Warriors (69% winning percentage) and top of the table Armidale (70% winning percentage).
